What replace before failure means
It does not mean ripping out a healthy five-year-old system. It means recognizing when continued repairs buy little reliable life—especially when efficiency, comfort, and safety are slipping—so you can plan instead of facing an emergency.
ENERGY STAR lists triggers such as equipment age, rising bills with frequent repairs, uneven temperatures, humidity problems, excess dust, noisy operation, and poor energy performance.
Age and efficiency cues (ESTIMATE / federal guidance)
- Heat pump or air conditioner: consider replacement when more than 10 years old.
- Furnace: consider replacement when more than 15 years old.
- Boiler: consider replacement when more than 15 years old.
These are federal program heuristics, not Tri-State failure clocks. A well-maintained 12-year-old AC can outperform a neglected eight-year-old unit. Mark personal timing as ESTIMATE until a qualified technician evaluates the equipment, ducts, and envelope.

Lean toward planned replacement if…
- AC or heat pump is over 10 years old, or furnace/boiler over 15, and repairs keep stacking
- Energy bills trend up while comfort trends down
- Short-cycling, chronic humidity, or wild room temperatures persist after duct basics
- A major repair is a large share of replacement cost
- Parts or refrigerant availability makes long-term repair unrealistic—confirm with a licensed tech
- You are upgrading insulation, windows, or ducts and can right-size equipment
Replace now if…
- There is a suspected cracked heat exchanger, persistent CO alarm, burning smell, or electrical hazard
- There is complete no-heat or no-cool in extreme weather with no safe temporary plan
- Equipment is flooded or contaminated after a water event

Before replacing: fix the house, not just the box
Ask about duct leakage, insulation, and air sealing, plus a Manual J load calculation, Manual S equipment selection, matched indoor/outdoor components, duct sealing, and thermostat strategy. Improper installation can cut efficiency substantially—contractor quality matters as much as SEER2 or AFUE.

Replace-before-failure is really plan-before-emergency.
