When an upper door scrapes its neighbor, a soft-close door stops pulling itself shut, or a lower door hangs open a finger-width, kitchens in Owensboro and Henderson, Princeton and Boonville, Tell City and Newburgh, and Carmi usually need a few small hinge adjustments, not a cabinet remodel. Across the ~60-mile Tri-State (Evansville as the hub, plus Mount Vernon IN in Posey County and Mount Vernon IL in Jefferson County, a different city), most modern kitchens use European-style concealed hinges, and those are built to be adjusted.
This guide covers checking and adjusting kitchen cabinet door hinges: sag, rubbing, uneven gaps, and soft-close that no longer works. It is not a furniture tip-over guide and not a ranking of hinge brands. If you’re already under the sink that weekend, our guide to cleaning the P-trap under your sink fits the same afternoon. Tri-State Homeowner Report is homeowner media and a matching service, not a cabinet installer. What this check is (and is not)
| Habit | What it is | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| Gap and sag walk | Looking for even gaps, door bottoms that clear drawers and counters, and soft-close that still pulls in | Rebuilding cabinet boxes or rehanging wall cabinets |
| Three-way hinge adjustment | Small turns for height, side-to-side (overlay), and depth, per the hinge maker | Forcing a bent door or stripping mounting-plate screws |
| Soft-close check | Confirming the damper still slows the last few inches | A substitute for anchoring freestanding furniture |
| Loose wall cabinet | A stop sign: the box itself is pulling away from the wall | Something a hinge screw can fix |
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Anchor It! campaign is about TVs and top-heavy freestanding furniture like dressers and bookcases: secure them, follow the maker’s instructions, and use anti-tip devices. Soft-close kitchen hinges don’t do that job. CPSC recall history also includes wall cabinets that detached when mounting hardware failed, so if a wall cabinet itself feels loose, stop adjusting hinges and get a pro to look at it.
Soft-close European hinges (Blum’s CLIP top BLUMOTION line is a common example) build the damper into the hinge so doors close quietly. Maker instructions typically describe three directions of adjustment: side (overlay), height, and depth. Exact screw locations and how far each one travels depend on the model, so always follow the sheet for your hinge.
Common cues and first moves
| Cue | What it likely means | First move |
|---|---|---|
| Uneven gaps at the top or sides | Height or side adjustment is off | Small turns, adjusting both hinges on the door evenly |
| Door rubs the frame or the next door | Side or depth setting is off, or the mounting plate is loose | Loosen, nudge, retighten; check the plate screws |
| Door hangs open or won’t stay shut | Worn spring or damper, a warped door, or a plate pulling out | Test the soft-close; call a pro if the wood is split |
| Soft-close slams | Worn damper, a switched-off damper, or the wrong setting for a light door | Check for an on/off switch on the hinge; replace if worn out |
| Screws spin in place | The particleboard no longer holds | Call a pro; don’t just drive in bigger screws |
| Wall cabinet gaps at the wall | Mounting problem | Stop and get an installer to look |
| Little kids in the house | Pinched fingers and slammed doors | Get doors closing reliably first, then add child latches |
A weekend hinge walk, step by step
- Empty the door of hanging towels or racks that pull it to one side.
- Open and close it slowly. Listen for grinding and watch whether the last few inches pull in smoothly.
- Sight the gaps against the frame and the doors next to it, and note which edge sits high, low, or proud.
- Support the door with your free hand before loosening anything so it doesn’t drop and strip the plate.
- Identify the hinge. Most modern kitchen doors use a 35 mm cup hinge with a mounting plate on the cabinet side. Older surface or butt hinges usually need shims or replacement rather than adjustment.
- Make tiny turns. Maker sheets for this style of hinge commonly list about 2 mm of side travel and a few millimeters of depth and height. Adjust both hinges on a door so they don’t fight each other.
- Snug the mounting-plate screws without cranking them into soft particleboard.
- Retest the soft-close with a gentle push from open. If your hinge has a damper on/off switch, make sure the setting suits the door’s weight.
- Set a seasonal reminder. Humidity swings in Tri-State kitchens move wood doors enough that a fall and spring look catches rubbing early.
Blum’s published instructions show the pattern many homeowners will recognize: a front screw for side-to-side, a rear screw for depth, and a cam or slotted plate screw for height, plus a clip that releases the door without tools. Your hinge may differ, so take a photo of it and check the maker’s sheet before forcing anything.
Do it yourself, or call a pro?
Usually fine to handle yourself when the doors are solid, the hinge cups and plates are intact, the particleboard isn’t crumbling, the wall cabinets feel firm, and you only need small adjustments or a soft-close check.
Call a pro when a wall cabinet is pulling away from the wall, mounting screws spin freely, doors are cracked or peeling, soft-close parts are broken and you aren’t sure what to buy, or glass doors need specialty hinges. Browse the contractor directory or request a contractor.
How often to check
- Any time a door rubs, won’t stay shut, or starts to slam.
- Fall and spring, when indoor humidity changes move wood doors.
- After heavier new doors, added organizers, or under-sink work that may have bumped a plate.
- When a baby or toddler joins the household, before you add child latches.

A note on cost
Replacement soft-close hinges, mounting plates, and a #2 screwdriver are national retail estimates until you check a local shelf price. We don’t publish made-up Evansville, Henderson, or Owensboro “cabinet realignment package” prices. Adjusting or swapping hinges on existing cabinets isn’t typically treated as a building-permit project.

Check the gaps, then make small turns
Look for rubbing, slamming, spinning screws, and gaps at the wall first. Then support the door and make small, even adjustments, and keep furniture anchoring as its own job.
